Finding the Right Rug for Your Home

If you are currently living with a rugless room then it’s time time to fill your blank canvas with something spectacular.  It’s amazing what a fabulous rug can do to a room. If the size, color, pattern, or texture are wrong then it can throw the entire aesthetic off. I will go through each of these elements so that you will have no problem selecting the perfect rug for your space.

Sizing is so important when selecting a rug. One of the most common design mistakes I see is a postage stamp size rug in a room that needs a bigger one.  Depending on what is in the room, there are rules to follow when considering size. In a space where furniture is floating, all of the furniture should be completely on the rug. When furniture is against the wall you want at least the front 2 legs of the furniture to be on the rug. For your dining room the rug should be at least 2’ from the tables edge so that all of the table and chairs fit comfortably on the rug and will not snag on the rug edge when the chairs are pulled out. For your bedroom you should have a large rug under the entire bed hanging about 3’ from all 3 exposed sides of the bed. An alternative is to have 2 runners flanking the sides of the bed.

When choosing the right color for your rug consider what else is in your room. Tie in a color that is already in the space. You want to make sure you don’t have too much of the same color in the room, so if there is already a lot of color it’s best not to compete and actually choose a more neutral rug. Vice versa, this is also a good time to introduce color to a room that is lacking in it.

Depending on what other patterns you have in the room already, a patterned rug or lack thereof can make a big difference. In a room that already has a lot of florals, stripes, or other patterns would look best with a rug that has little or no pattern at all. In a room that has very little pattern in it, then a patterned rug would add personality and depth to a room. Think oriental, striped, or floral, the options are endless.

Choosing the right texture for your rug can set the tone for your space. Shag or more plush rugs can make a cozy and comfortable room for its users. A sisal or natural rug can look great in rooms that already have a lot of pattern and color in the space.

If you have a small rug that you don’t want to part with, consider layering it on top a larger rug. I love a textural neutral sisal rug with a patterned rug on top! A great way to save money is to bind your old carpet or purchase a piece of broadloom for a rug. Feels comfy on your toes and looks fantastic as a rug.

With these hot tips I hope you can find the perfect rug for your room. It’s amazing what a rug can do to a space when chosen correctly. Have fun decorating!
