A Well Designed Bedroom

We may live a third of our life in our bedrooms, but it’s often the most overlooked spaces to redesign. Here are some important tips to make this room look so beautiful you will want to find an excuse to go to bed early and wake up late.

Your bed is the perfect place to start when decorating your bedroom. The key to making a bed look and feel inviting is to implement layers. I’m not talking about the millions of pillows that you will have to take off just to put back on in the morning. Begin with a flat sheet and bed skirt if your bed frame allows. The second layer is your fitted sheet followed by a blanket. The top layer is your duvet and lastly decorative items such a throw blanket and pillows. I like the way a bed looks when you choose a pattern for either the sheet set and pillowcases or the duvet cover, or BOTH! A plush or textural throw pillow and throw blanket is a must for comfort and will add dimension and interest to your room.

Rug size is a common mistake I see in bedrooms. For example, if you have a larger bed- let’s say a king size you will need a large 9’ x 12’ rug to go underneath the bed completely and the front 2 legs of your nightstands. This will allow the rug to peak out roughly 2’6”-3’ on all 3 sides of the bed. You want your feet to be able to cozy up to the rug when you step out of the bed and you want the possibility of a bench to be positioned at the foot of your bed without it hanging off the rug. Another option is to select 2 runners to flank the sides of the bed. If you choose to do this, make sure that they are not underneath the bed or the nightstands at all. The runners need to be floating and span from the start of your nightstands to the end of the bed, which is roughly 2’w x 4’6”l against a king size bed.

What about wall color? Lighter colors tend to create a calmer and more relaxing ambiance, especially those derived from nature. My favorite neutrals to use are Benjamin Moore Gray Owl OC-52 and Benjamin Moore Simply White OC-117. My favorite blue and green colors are Benjamin Moore Lookout Point 1646 and Benjamin Moore Healing Aloe 1562.

Lighting is another element in a bedroom that can not be forgotten.  For overall lighting try a flush mount, chandelier, or fan light depending on how high your ceiling is.  Task lighting should flank the bed and can either be table lamps, sconces, or even a hanging pendant. Don’t forget task lighting for an accent reading chair if your space allows. Natural daylight is also something to consider when decorating.  I will always ask clients if they want blackout shades and/or curtains in their bedrooms to help them sleep.

Don’t be afraid to put your bed in front of a window. If you floor plan is limited, this could create the best flow. Choose a headboard that is on the lower side so that it will let in the most sunlight. Flank the bed with curtains to help frame the window and bed setting.

I guarantee if you are not already getting great sleep that you will feel a huge change by implementing a new design you love. Sweet Dreams!
