Interior Design Inspo

Where do interior designers look for inspiration?  There are so many venues where as a designer we can stay current with trends and keep our minds working to learn more about the industry. The list below includes my favorite resources, as well as a few of my favorite designers that I admire. Depending on your preferable learning style, I have a little something for everyone.

For the digital age: At my initial meeting with the client I ask to share any design inspiration that they have.  More often times than not I am given a link to an online source with photos.

-Houzz and Pinterest are the 2 most popular and efficient ways that a client can convey what they like and don’t like. They both have features where you can create folders dedicated to each room and you can make notes on each photo so you remember what exactly inspired you. These websites are continuously updated by artists and people in the design world.  What’s even better is they are free, quick, and easy.

-Instagram is another popular spot for inspiration. Here you can follow top designers, furniture makers, manufacturers, and artisans on their quest to find what’s hot, what’s not, and what influences their beautiful designs. A few of my favorite Instagram accounts are @vestigehome, @beataheuman, and @benjaminvandiver.

-Blogs are terrific sites to keep tabs on if you are looking to learn more about design. A few of my favorites are Design Milk, Apartment Therapy, and Mad About the House.

For something tangible: A paper magazine will never go out of style.  Environmentally conscious? Pretty much every magazine has a digital subscription.  My go to magazines for the latest in interior design trends and styles are Domino and House Beautiful. They do a fantastic job at giving the reader a range of interior styling from traditional to modern.

For listeners: Podcasts are excellent ways to learn something new in the design world. The best thing about them is they can be listened to on the go, in your car, or a lunch break. Pictures can say a thousand words, but a great storyteller or teacher can share a wealth of knowledge. My favorite design podcasts are Design Matters with Debbie Millman and Clever. Both podcasts interview designers and artists to reveal what makes their creative minds tick.

I know everyone started this New Year thinking, how can I make my home more beautiful this year? Where do I start? These tools can steer you in the right path. Cheers to an inspiring 2020!
